Background

Swegon, part of Latour Group, is a market leader in energy efficient ventilation and indoor climate systems. The company delivers smart products and system solutions that create a good indoor climate and contribute to significant energy savings.

With new environmental requirements and legislations the need for reducing energy consumption and operating costs was vital. To meet those high requirements Swegon was looking to create an energy-efficient and flexible wireless climate control system. Another important driver for the smart buildings solution was to get ahead of competition and to generate new revenue streams.

In 2016, Swegon launched a unique IoT enabled climate control system, New WISE, utilizing Telenor Connexion’s and LumenRadio’s wireless connectivity and cloud services. The WISE system is a fully wireless, demand-controlled ventilation system optimizing the air conditioning of rooms and the energy consumed.

Challenge

Taking the step from offering a traditional ventilation system to delivering indoor climate as a service reflects a heightened ambition. With the new WISE system Swegon is now not just supplying products, but also a service function, air quality as a service. This change from product to service has led to both internal and external challenges. The main internal challenges were in changing processes, systems and mindsets. For example getting the sales force to understand and want to sell value instead of products. Externally it meant redefining relationships with the stakeholders in the value chain.

Solution

Swegon WISE is an IoT-enabled climate control system optimizing the air conditioning of buildings and the amount of power consumed. The fully wireless, demand-controlled ventilation system is designed to be easily modified and adapted without demanding reinstallation on-site.

Over-the-air adaptation of changes to the property is possible. The system also allows for issues to be resolved remotely and work to be made preventively.

The radio communication makes the system “self-healing” – if one of the components goes down, the system automatically will find a new communication way around the broken component. This means that the system will always be up and running.

Result

The IoT simplifies how buildings talk to the cloud and analyze building data to uncover new insights capable of driving real value and greater performance. Now the indoor climate of the property can be controlled and monitored down to the room level.

The new IoT solution has enabled Swegon to take demand-controlled ventilation to a higher level with a gained competitive advantage as a result. The fully wireless solution and the air quality-as-a-service are perceived as the most innovative by customers. For property owners, a cost savings of up to 70% is achievable compared to a traditional system.

With their solution Swegon has also broadened their customer focus – moving from talking about ventilation products to installers and consultants, to making value-based argumentation to end users, building owners and main contractors.

Many values in the system are related to the lifetime of the building, not just during but also before and after the installation. This means everything from the planning of the building in an early phase to the operation of the building for the upcoming 20 to 25 years. In the end, the property owner has a building with an optimal indoor climate for the lowest possible operating cost, regarding both energy and maintenance.
