Binando: Digitizing waste removal

Can garbage be part of the IoT? German startup Binando think so.

Highlights

  • Binando supplies an end-to-end connected solution for the waste removal industry
  • Combining data from connected bins and real-time maps, the Binando solution optimizes pickup routes
  • Binando’s customers are reducing mileage while increasing productivity
  • With Telenor Connexion Global Connectivity, Binando are ready to scale

Background

After noticing a lack of digitalization in the waste removal industry, Nikolaos Baltsios and Moritz Pfeiffer, a pair of engineers from Stuttgart, decided to found Binando. They pooled their expertise in software, data analysis and hardware to build an end-to-end solution designed to help waste removal firms do their jobs in a more efficient and eco-friendly manner.

Challenge

Binando developed a custom-made sensor module to be placed inside bins. Each hour, the module emits an ultrasonic signal to measure how full the bin is. When the capacity is reached, a request for collection is triggered in a backend platform.

The driver’s collection route is then optimally planned using an algorithm which incorporates traffic and weather data. The route is sent to the driver in an app on a phone or tablet. The app can also be used for communication between dispatchers and drivers and to track the truck’s location.

In order to share its reports, the sensor module needed to connect to the internet. Using readily available mobile (cellular) networks would be the easiest solution, which meant the team needed to source SIM cards to install in the sensor devices.

With Telenor Connexion Global Connectivity, our modules can connect right out of the box.

Solution

The Binando team tested SIMs from local network operators, but those suppliers were not able to deploy the SIMs quickly enough to meet Binando’s needs. Based on a lead, they tried the Global SIM from Telenor Connexion.

With Telenor Connexion Global Connectivity, the Binando solution was ready to scale. The sensor modules would now work in any market, while Binando could maintain one source of contact for billing and support.

With the solution complete, Binando was ready to approach municipalities and waste removal firms. It didn’t take long for the unique Binando solution to gain some attention, and some major customers.

Results

In the city of Stuttgart, an estimated 12,500 tonnes of glass are placed in recycling bins each year. REMONDIS, one of the world’s largest recycling, service and water companies, is responsible for collecting that glass. To help streamline the collection process, REMONDIS decided to deploy the Binando modules in an initial 1,000 glass recycling bins at around 330 locations across the city.

Now, REMONDIS collection crews no longer travel a standard route. At the start of each shift, the crew find the day’s timetable in the Binando app. Dispatchers and drivers can easily and conveniently exchange information at any time via the app.

After just a few months, the Binando solution has produced measurable results. REMONDIS have reduced mileage spent on glass collection in Stuttgart by 33 percent while collecting 10 percent more glass each month.

With an estimated 15 percent fewer collection trips needed, this solution is helping reduce traffic congestion and pollution in Stuttgart. A long-term analysis of the data should also make it clear where new recycling bins need to be installed.

As Binando continue to gain contracts with municipalities and contractors in Germany, they have their sights set on the international market. The team plan to roll out new functionalities which will further support digitalization in the waste removal industry and the sustainable use of the Earth’s resources.

Like any startup, we want to scale. The global solution from Telenor Connexion will allow us to quickly onboard clients around the world.
– Nikolaos Baltsios, Head of Business & Operations at Binando
