Positioning and tracking solutions ranges from personal navigation devices to control of moving objects such as containers and trailers. The combination of GPS and GSM connectivity is providing a global standard for positioning and tracking solutions, which will help increase the utilization of fleets, improve efficiency and prevent fraud and theft of equipment or goods. We are also working with tracking solution providers targeting consumer markets with for example children or pet tracking solutions as well as security alert services.

How can Telenor Connexion help?

The global standard of GPS and GSM is providing a strong platform for track and trace solutions across the globe. Telenor Connexion is dedicated in securing connectivity solutions on a global basis while keeping availability, security and data protection our top priorities. Should our global GSM/UMTS partner network not be sufficient, we are also partnering with satellite communications providers that can complement the coverage in remote places and over seas etc. Our aim is to help you deploy the best connectivity service possible – suiting your specific application, area of operations and business model.

Haldex Brake Products

“Our telematics solutions give the user full control of their trailer fleet, not just the exact position of the trailer but also real-time diagnostics such as the trailer’s brake status, weight and so on. We operate on an international level and needed a robust communication solution that could be aligned with our business model throughout Europe. We are continuously developing our products in close cooperation with our communication partner, Telenor.”

In Europe alone (EU23+2) there are some 253 million electricity meters, 109 million gas meters and 3 million district heating meters. ( Berg Insight (2009)) Consequently, meter reading and management of remote meters is one of the core fundamentals of the utility and energy sector.

As a basis for creating effective usage of energy and a sustainable energy distribution system, much focus is now placed on building “smart grids” – intelligent energy networks. One core component of the smart grids is to enable connectivity towards the meters in the grid, thereby enhancing the possibility to monitor and manage energy consumption in real-time.

The movement towards smart metering is partly driven by regulation and a recent EU initiative indicates that 80 percent of all electricity meters will be so called smart meters by 2020. Whilst the overall aim from an EU perspective is energy savings and movement towards a more environmental energy value chain, this new technology also provides a platform for fewer and less severe outages, reduction in energy network losses and a more efficient energy market.

The new generation of smart metering solutions not only makes remote meter reading possible but also provides a platform for various value adding services such as improved customer relations management and demand side management, important factors for an increasingly competitive energy market environment.

Smart metering systems usually include three main components: a connected meter, a communication network and data collection/management systems. Telenor Connexion is working closely towards both meter manufacturers as well towards providers of central data management systems to integrate GSM/GPRS connectivity solutions in the best possible way for large-scale deployments.

According to market estimates from Berg Insight there are some 35 million alarm systems in Western and Central Europe. Most of them are unmonitored local alarms but about 20 percent, 7 million, are high security alarms monitored by an alarm response centre and these require some kind of communication technology. Penetration rate for alarms differs substantially from market to market, but is generally in the range of 1-10 percent of all households and is expected to grow significantly over the next coming years.

While most alarms traditionally have used fixed telephone lines as means of communication – there has been a strong movement towards wireless technologies for both home alarms and professional alarms. There are three main drivers for wireless technologies being integrated into today’s alarm systems:

Improved reliability – fixed lines are often used for other purposes such as fax, answering machines, DSL modems etc. which can create disturbances. A wireless connection is solely used for the intended alarm purpose – thereby securing best possible alarm connectivity.

Cost-effective installation – installation time and cost can be reduced by using standardised wireless equipment which also implies full flexibility of the alarm location.

Product development opportunities – increasing demands of more advanced alarm functionality such as notification, picture, video support is well in line with high-capacity mobile networks for data and voice communication. Using global GSM/GPRS standards, alarm manufactures can develop and sell cost-effective solutions with standardised connectivity solutions for multiple markets.

Telenor Connexion has been working closely with some of the leading providers of security solutions on an international level for many years. We can apply our experience to your specific product and business needs to create a valuable platform for taking your security solutions to the next step.

There are endless possibilities within the rapidly growing field of M2M communications.

Machine-to-machine communications (M2M) is a rapidly growing field of business. Across the globe, more and more industries are moving towards integrated connectivity solutions into machines, devices and vehicles of different kinds. The purpose may vary but the overall objective is naturally to stay competitive. Connected products bring business value through:

Increased revenue opportunities – by adding new service offerings enhancing the core product

Improved operational efficiency – real-time access to monitor and manage remote assets such as machines and equipment help minimize down-time and improve operational levels

Reduced cost – enable you to manage and monitor assets remotely no matter where the unit is located

Reduced environmental effects - enables for example more efficient usage of connected fleets or streamlining monitoring processes

In Europe alone there are several billion devices that could potentially be networked by wireless technologies such as GSM/UMTS. The combination of standard GSM technology and the Internet form the basis of adding new business value to your products no matter where they are located in the world.

Whatever your motives are, you will need a reliable and experienced partner to solve your communication needs. Telenor Connexion provides managed connectivity solutions on a global basis for various industries and applications – some examples include:

The connected car – we are working closely with several of the car manufacturers to integrate connectivity into the car for various reasons. eCall services (automatic alarm in case of an accident), remote diagnostics and infotainment systems are some of the areas that are growing rapidly.

The connected truck – Scania, Daimler and Volvo are all customers on an international level. The most common application is fleet management solutions, where real-time connectivity is an absolute must – no matter where the truck is being located.

The connected electricity meter – automated meter reading/management via wireless technologies is adapted by many utility companies across the globe to increase control and provide a better service towards its customers.

The connected container – different kinds of asset tracking and monitoring solutions are increasingly developing areas. Container tracking is of course one area, but the same needs apply to many different assets that might be “on the move” such as trailers, rail cargo, shipments, etc.

The connected alarm – although for example home alarms have been connected before many alarm manufactures are now moving into wireless technologies instead of fixed lines. Improved operations/accessibility and easier installations are some of the reasons for deploying wireless connectivity.

These are just a few examples of products that have been (and can be) connected – the possibilities are more or less endless.
