Creating a premium service for M2M or Telematics solutions is a team effort between Telenor Connexion and our customers. Based on a set of guidelines developed within a GSMA working group for M2M terminal and roaming behavior, Telenor requires that all of their customers contractually commit to having embedded connectivity products that are optimized for mobile networks. This includes customers that we have had since the early 2000s (whereby we create amended contracts) right up to contracts we are signing today. Perhaps you are wondering why this is so important?

It’s important because the behavior of M2M terminals, alarm panels, smart meters, tracking devices, etc. are different than the behavior of normal consumer devices such as mobile telephones. And each M2M application on the market can affect other applications and consumers. An M2M device could inadvertently signal in a manner that causes 2G or 3G networks to experience fluctuating service – thereby affecting the entire subscriber, enterprise and M2M customer base! The surprising part is that this can happen even if the M2M product/terminal has been certified according to 3GPP or ETSI standards – AND even if it has been additionally certified by a leading Mobile Network Operator (MNO). Are you surprised? Maybe, but the truth is that adhering to the standards and passing the certification tests made by these organizations only ensures that the performance of the terminal is in line with the required performance of a 2G/3G mobile device. But we at Telenor Connexion, after years of working with M2M applications, know that machines can act differently than humans!

We put heavy emphasis on ensuring our customers have the knowledge to optimize the whole M2M solution behavior and interaction with mobile network, from terminal to central system (i.e. non synchronous signalling, remote management, optimized connection attempt schemes, and much more!) Telenor Connexion’s three step M2M Quality Program helps to guide our customers through the process from conception to release of an M2M application.

Yes, we have to admit that some of our customers resist having to institute changes to their M2M or telematics solutions due to the effort involved in implementing software changes – but most of them understand and are happy that Telenor Connexion has a reliability and quality focus! Our customers appreciate that we are helping them to ensure future proof technology in M2M. Unfortunately, we are aware that some M2M connectivity service providers are not asking their customers to comply to the same high standards today, but it is our sincere hope that they too will follow in our footsteps to ensure that as M2M grows in the industry we are working together to protect the reliability of delivering stable GPRS/SMS/ and 3G services. In the meantime our customers, module partners and roaming partners are ecstatic that we are!

Earthrise Technologies (www.earthrisetech.com), a subsidiary of the Digisec Group (www.digisecgroup.com), and Telenor Connexion (www.telenorconnexion.com), the leading machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity provider, have formed a partnership to deploy Digisec’s unique and innovative eco navigation product, Eco-Way, using Telenor Connexion’s global wireless connectivity solution for telematics applications. The partnership will initially focus on deploying eco-navigation devices in North America, and later in the year expand to Europe and other international markets.

The Eco-Way is an innovative, ground-breaking portable navigation device featuring an electrical interface that connects directly to the diagnostics bus within a vehicle, thereby enabling it to collect real-time engine and performance data. The Eco-Way processes this information and displays in real-time MPG and CO2 per mile in a Prius-like display. Eco-Way also calculates an “Eco-Score” telling the driver the degree to which their driving is eco-friendly. Vehicle and driver performance information is sent via Telenor Connexion’s global GPRS network to the TSP’s fleet management database where fleet operators can review vehicle and driver performance statistics and vehicle maintenance information. One of the key value propositions of the Eco-Way is the ability for drivers to see in real-time how their driving behaviour affects gas mileage and CO2 emissions so they can make improvement, as well as how their vehicle performs relative to the capabilities advertised by the manufacturer.

Of particular importance in this system is the ability to provision, manage and support thousands of remote, internet-connected eco-navigation devices, on a global basis, and to ensure reliable capture and presentation of critical data, and make immediate notification of any vehicle faults or problems. This capability is provided through Telenor Connexion’s comprehensive global telematics connectivity solution.

– We are very excited to be working with Telenor Connexion, a world leader in global M2M connectivity solutions with a distinguished reputation, says Jim DiSanto, President of Earthrise and a Digisec board member.

– Oil prices are again heading up as the world economy transitions from recession to a new growth cycle. Fuel costs are the number one concern of fleet operators world-wide, followed closely by the cost of emissions. Transportation is now the number one man-made producer of green house gases, and pressure is being brought upon fleet operators to reduce their emissions. Using innovative telematics technology like Eco-Way coupled with Telenor Connexion connectivity services can reduce transportation emissions in most fleets by 30-40%, Jim DiSanto continues.

– We are pleased to work with such a pioneering company like Digisec. The product is built and launched towards the professional fleet and transportation vertical in an innovative way, and in view of the environmental focus and consideration arising all around the world. It is with great enthusiasm we contribute with our global M2M connectivity solution, says Niclas Andersson, Global Business Development Executive, Telenor Connexion.

In Europe alone (EU23+2) there are some 253 million electricity meters, 109 million gas meters and 3 million district heating meters. ( Berg Insight (2009)) Consequently, meter reading and management of remote meters is one of the core fundamentals of the utility and energy sector.

As a basis for creating effective usage of energy and a sustainable energy distribution system, much focus is now placed on building “smart grids” – intelligent energy networks. One core component of the smart grids is to enable connectivity towards the meters in the grid, thereby enhancing the possibility to monitor and manage energy consumption in real-time.

The movement towards smart metering is partly driven by regulation and a recent EU initiative indicates that 80 percent of all electricity meters will be so called smart meters by 2020. Whilst the overall aim from an EU perspective is energy savings and movement towards a more environmental energy value chain, this new technology also provides a platform for fewer and less severe outages, reduction in energy network losses and a more efficient energy market.

The new generation of smart metering solutions not only makes remote meter reading possible but also provides a platform for various value adding services such as improved customer relations management and demand side management, important factors for an increasingly competitive energy market environment.

Smart metering systems usually include three main components: a connected meter, a communication network and data collection/management systems. Telenor Connexion is working closely towards both meter manufacturers as well towards providers of central data management systems to integrate GSM/GPRS connectivity solutions in the best possible way for large-scale deployments.

According to market estimates from Berg Insight there are some 35 million alarm systems in Western and Central Europe. Most of them are unmonitored local alarms but about 20 percent, 7 million, are high security alarms monitored by an alarm response centre and these require some kind of communication technology. Penetration rate for alarms differs substantially from market to market, but is generally in the range of 1-10 percent of all households and is expected to grow significantly over the next coming years.

While most alarms traditionally have used fixed telephone lines as means of communication – there has been a strong movement towards wireless technologies for both home alarms and professional alarms. There are three main drivers for wireless technologies being integrated into today’s alarm systems:

Improved reliability – fixed lines are often used for other purposes such as fax, answering machines, DSL modems etc. which can create disturbances. A wireless connection is solely used for the intended alarm purpose – thereby securing best possible alarm connectivity.

Cost-effective installation – installation time and cost can be reduced by using standardised wireless equipment which also implies full flexibility of the alarm location.

Product development opportunities – increasing demands of more advanced alarm functionality such as notification, picture, video support is well in line with high-capacity mobile networks for data and voice communication. Using global GSM/GPRS standards, alarm manufactures can develop and sell cost-effective solutions with standardised connectivity solutions for multiple markets.
