Telit Wireless Solutions is an internationally leading specialist in wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) technology. Telit is the only company worldwide to offer communications modules for all of the various wireless technologies: it develops produces and markets modules for GSM/GPRS, UMTS/WEDGE/HSDPA, CDMA/EVDO and Short-Range RF applications. Telit Wireless Solutions is known for its four core values that play a key role in ensuring the customer’s success: business scalability, ease of integration, investment protection, and world class quality. Telit products are divided into families; each tailored to different levels of integration and volumes according to application size and production scale. Within one product family, all of the modules have the same size and shape, the same connectors or BGA and the same software interface. As one of the first players to do so, Telit has enhanced its existing service portfolio with its new service concept: the Telit Infinita Services. The primary target of this offering is the simplification of the M2M solution deployment and maintenance of software devices. M2M applications rationalize business processes by enabling machines, equipment and vehicles to communicate with each other via mobile networks. Telit products are used all over the world and marketed via Telit’s offices in Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Korea, Spain, the Republic of South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK and the USA. Telit’s global distributor network comprises specialists in wireless technologies and enhances the customer experience in over 56 countries worldwide.

In Europe alone (EU23+2) there are some 253 million electricity meters, 109 million gas meters and 3 million district heating meters. ( Berg Insight (2009)) Consequently, meter reading and management of remote meters is one of the core fundamentals of the utility and energy sector.

As a basis for creating effective usage of energy and a sustainable energy distribution system, much focus is now placed on building “smart grids” – intelligent energy networks. One core component of the smart grids is to enable connectivity towards the meters in the grid, thereby enhancing the possibility to monitor and manage energy consumption in real-time.

The movement towards smart metering is partly driven by regulation and a recent EU initiative indicates that 80 percent of all electricity meters will be so called smart meters by 2020. Whilst the overall aim from an EU perspective is energy savings and movement towards a more environmental energy value chain, this new technology also provides a platform for fewer and less severe outages, reduction in energy network losses and a more efficient energy market.

The new generation of smart metering solutions not only makes remote meter reading possible but also provides a platform for various value adding services such as improved customer relations management and demand side management, important factors for an increasingly competitive energy market environment.

Smart metering systems usually include three main components: a connected meter, a communication network and data collection/management systems. Telenor Connexion is working closely towards both meter manufacturers as well towards providers of central data management systems to integrate GSM/GPRS connectivity solutions in the best possible way for large-scale deployments.

According to market estimates from Berg Insight there are some 35 million alarm systems in Western and Central Europe. Most of them are unmonitored local alarms but about 20 percent, 7 million, are high security alarms monitored by an alarm response centre and these require some kind of communication technology. Penetration rate for alarms differs substantially from market to market, but is generally in the range of 1-10 percent of all households and is expected to grow significantly over the next coming years.

While most alarms traditionally have used fixed telephone lines as means of communication – there has been a strong movement towards wireless technologies for both home alarms and professional alarms. There are three main drivers for wireless technologies being integrated into today’s alarm systems:

Improved reliability – fixed lines are often used for other purposes such as fax, answering machines, DSL modems etc. which can create disturbances. A wireless connection is solely used for the intended alarm purpose – thereby securing best possible alarm connectivity.

Cost-effective installation – installation time and cost can be reduced by using standardised wireless equipment which also implies full flexibility of the alarm location.

Product development opportunities – increasing demands of more advanced alarm functionality such as notification, picture, video support is well in line with high-capacity mobile networks for data and voice communication. Using global GSM/GPRS standards, alarm manufactures can develop and sell cost-effective solutions with standardised connectivity solutions for multiple markets.

Telenor Connexion has been working closely with some of the leading providers of security solutions on an international level for many years. We can apply our experience to your specific product and business needs to create a valuable platform for taking your security solutions to the next step.
