The retail sector is increasingly using wireless technologies to enable sales and payment transaction in various environments. Mobile or temporary sales units, vending machines, ticketing machines, parking meters and mobile credit-card terminals are a few examples of customised integration of wireless connectivity for secure and reliable transactions. Integration of connectivity also means a possibility to monitor and track sales and even remotely change prices according to customer behaviour. This also allows for remote changes according to weather conditions or supply status which could be applied to such applications as a vending machine.

According to Beecham Research (2008) sales of mobile-enabled credit cards terminals (used in taxis, restaurants etc.) equalled almost 1 million units worldwide in 2007 and is also expected to grow significantly due to the new standards for secure payments (EMV) pushing replacement of old credit card terminals in many markets.

Telenor Connexion is working closely with the retail and finance industry to enable new innovative point-of-sales concepts by using wireless GSM/GPRS technology.
