The European Smart Metering Awards, which takes place in connection with the Smart Metering UK & Europe Summit, recognises achievements and innovation from utilities and technology providers involved in the European Smart Metering roll-out.

National Grid company and Telenor Connexion customer OnStream was nominated for both, “Metering Manufacturer & Technology of the Year” and “Innovation of the Year”, for its connected Smart Meters and won both awards.

Telenor Connexion has been working alongside OnStream for over 18 months, providing the connectivity for the new OnStream Smart Meters. The unique solution designed by Telenor Connexion allows each meter to connect to any UK mobile network without network bias, ensuring the highest quality of connectivity for the solution.
OnStream’s mobile communications-based meters use low levels of electricity, enabling low levels of power consumption. The meters also include the ability to accommodate communication with smart appliances as they become more widely available, leading to the formation of the Smart Grid.

− Congratulations to OnStream and all of the other partners involved in the delivery of this top quality solution, that is sure to play a major part over the coming years of smart metering deployment in the UK, says Dean Woods, Head of Region UK & Ireland at Telenor Connexion.

− We are delighted to win these awards. Not only do they recognise the hard work we have put into our product development, but are also confirmation from the industry that OnStream is seen to have the leading smart products and are at the forefront of driving forward innovative solutions to support the wider industry smart roll out, says Keith Hawkins, Strategy & Smart Development Manager at OnStream.

The UK government has unveiled plans for every home in Britain to be equipped with Smart Meters. Some 22 million gas meters and 26 million electricity meters need to be fitted at a cost of £7 billion. (Source: Smart metering UK & Europe 2011 Summit)

All award entries were assessed and judged upon by an independent panel of industry experts. The awards were presented on January 27th at an exclusive gala dinner at the Smart Metering UK & Europe Summit in London, UK.

About OnStream
OnStream offers smart metering services aimed at improving service provision and reducing environmental impact. The company provides a flexible and professional range of meter management services to UK energy suppliers. To date, OnStream has installed in excess of two million gas meters and one million electricity meters.

With the new M2M quality program the company is raising the benchmark for end-to-end reliability and quality in M2M deployments.

Following the successful launch of a dedicated platform for global M2M and telematics deployments in 2009, Telenor Connexion is now further enhancing its offer by providing an extensive program to guide customers and partners when integrating connectivity solutions. Hence, ensuring reliability, security and cost efficiency.

Drawing from over 10 years experience, Telenor Connexion has formalized its knowledge into the new M2M quality program. Built around a series of workshops, lab simulations and knowledge transfer sessions the program contains five main packages, from initial requirement specifications and solutions design, through test and validation to operational processes and tools.

The program has proven to be a highly efficient way to secure a successful embedded connectivity launch, enabling a product and service that deliver higher quality and value to the end user. The key benefits are:

Higher quality for the end-customer service

Quicker time to market

Less reiterations of the application design as faults can be corrected prior to release

More robust and cost efficient designs

Securing a sustainable business model and product development plan

Ensuring compliance to GSMA fraud, signalling and security standards

Testing how customer terminals handle different types of networks is one part of the M2M Quality Program.

– The main advantage of testing our equipment in Telenor Connexion’s Mobile Network Simulation Lab was to be able to test different handover/roaming scenarios and different types of network situations over and over again. Something which is almost impossible to test in a live network, says Nils Nordin, Telecommunication responsible at Scania, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks and buses for heavy transport applications.

– The usage and traffic behavior is very different from case to case, but it is critical that connectivity is integrated in the right way to secure full functionality and reliability over time. We help our customers deploy high-quality and sustainable connectivity solutions for their business and life critical applications, says Per Simonsen, CEO at Telenor Connexion.

Telenor Connexion sees an increased interest from different industries in embedding connectivity to machines, vehicles and devices.

Industry analyst firm Berg Insight forecasts that, until 2014, the number of cellular M2M connections worldwide is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.6 percent to reach 187.1 million.

Over the past years, with success of movies like “An inconvenient truth” from AL Gore or “Home” from Yann Arthus Bertrand, we have seen a growing commitment to reduce greenhouse gaz emissions (GHG). With the transport sector accounting for more than 13% of CO2 emission worldwide (IPCC2007i) and with road freight transport as the major and growing portion, there is a real focus of policy-makers and citizens-customers who are demanding for more information and regulation. We can observe here and there a global consensus on how to mitigate the GHG: from “hard” regulations like the road user charging systemsii, via disclosure of “carbon footprintiii” to more voluntary solutions like fuel monitoring. In one word, there is a need for more environmental-aware supply chains requiring the use of smart and innovative solutions.

In an energy-constrained world, what supply-chains will require?

What will be the next direction to take for telematics designers in Transport &Logistics (T&L) sector?

Recently, the sudden peak of oil price in summer 2008iv has obviously contributed to trigger a greater adoption among T&L sector for telematics solutions enabling the “fuel consumption monitoring” and the success of new policy for improvement of driver education like “eco-driving”. Truck OEMs and Fleet management System vendors have developed a large portfolio of solutions for reducing the energy consumption. Car OEMs will propose more and more in new car models similar features. But that’s only one side of the problem. Key takeaways I would like to share here are based on analysis of the end customers from the T&L sector in conjunction with the feedback from company fleet managers.

Oil prices will very likely continue to increase and so will the use of alternative fuels, however neither is likely to revolutionize the T&L sector. If oil price volatility is a significant risk for the sector, one thing is really sure, supply chains will evolve in the direction of ensuring that cost of emissions is paid by the causer. Whether or not, the one who designs telematics, see it as a business opportunity, T&L providers and fleet managers will need to track, document and declare their CO2 emissions (the so-called “carbon footprint”) in the future and thereafter, other types of emissions such as Nitrogen Oxyde, noise, etc. On every company level, the monitoring of carbon footprint will require introduction of “mobility account” for employees which implies a mileage reporting solution for the entire fleet. In parallel of mobility accounts, “CO2 tickersv” would have to be calculated in order to document all carbon emissions caused during the production and transport of manufactured goods. CO2 tickers could become standard for all consumer products since the overall objective is to influence consumer behavior. Companies having seized this opportunity early enough will gain a competitive advantage and have a significant marketing and PR value (on the opposite of the green washing).

Another key trend in supply chains is the need of continuous real-time control of the flows of goods. Such systems bring benefits to supply-chains in terms of greater visibility and better flexibility, preventing the risks of external disturbances. For example, telematics can help in detection of unplanned stops and delayed deliveries. Another key service offered by telematics provided by truck OEMs is remote diagnostics enabling a greater uptime and means for preventive maintenance. In the rail sector, GPS localization of shuttle trains and single wagons are critical information for insuring good timing in deliveries. In addition, telematics can help for insuring security of high value goods transported with adapted sensors. The value of such services is automatically increased with the oil price risk.

In conclusion, to coping with a low-carbon world requires tackling new challenges. The Transport and Logistics providers and the fleet managers would have a greater interest in adopting telematics solutions giving a good bundle of benefits including not only the immediate savings with fuel monitoring but as well the facility to track and document all emissions, plus capacity of real-time monitoring.

ii Some cities have adopted congestion schemes like Singapore, London and Stockholm. Many countries have road charging systems, but only few have the capacity to create a toll system based on level of emissions: the Toll Collect in Germany since 2005, Slovakpass since 2010 and the future Eco-taxe in France to be launched in 2012.

iii France has recently adopted in 2010 a law ”Grenelle de l’environnement II”, requiring all companies of more than 500 employees in France to declare annually and progressively from January 2011 their carbon footprint and CO2 ticker for manufactured goods.

iv On July 11, 2008, oil barrel price rose to a new record of $147.27. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_of_petroleum

v CO2 ticker is the idea of putting a label identifying the emissions caused during the production and transport. Initial examples are already in place. For CO2 ticker, the challenge is to agree on a future industry-standard.

Normally any communicating M2M device starts with a modem/module from manufacturers like Cinterion, Sierra Wireless, Telit or Ericsson. These modems have all been type approved according to tests specified by 2G (GSM) or 3G (UMTS) standards, just like any mobile phone in the market.

So far so good, but in the case of M2M these modems are then built into products (e.g electricity meters, vehicles, credit card terminals etc), so additional hardware and software is added to make a complete product. On top of that some sort of central system or service application is normally needed to retrieve, handle and store data from the products.

Because of the additional complexity in a M2M applications potential problems can occur. Below are a few examples:

- The modem is type approved, but not the complete product including system software with complete functionality – problems are discovered too late after commercial launch begins
- We did some field testing with 10-20 units and everything worked fine, but when our solution grew to thousands of units we did not understand what was needed for them to co-exist and behave in a controlled manner in the mobile networks

In order to avoid unpredicted cost (re-visits of already deployed products or re-calling of products) it is imperative to test and validate key traffic and signaling behaviour in a test lab environment where different mobile networks can be simulated in a controlled manner, thereby allowing test situations that are hard or impossible to simulate in real life.

Customer products can be tested to dig deeper and determine things like:

At what received signal strength does the product loose connection to the network?

If connection to the mobile data network (GPRS) is temporarily lost, does the product re-connect as it should?

Do handovers between cell sites or networks work correctly without lost service or data?

How much data is used for a unique transaction, how much data is consumed for overhead signaling in a specific scenario?

Does the connected unit handle network error codes in a correct manner?

These are just some examples of things not so easy (or even impossible) to test when connected to a live network. Tests like these have proven to be successful when developing and securing end to end communication functionality as well as and choice of aerial/antenna for optimized and cost-effective installation and operation.

Telenor Connexion encourages all our partners and customers to spend a couple of days performing tests like these in our test environment. After all, a couple of days of testing is a small effort compared to a scenario of having to re-call a multitude of deployed products.

A communications solution allows electric vehicle drivers to plan their routes, monitor their battery capacity and find the nearest place to charge their cars.

Range anxiety is a condition that often afflicts people while at the helm of an electric vehicle. Anxiety escalates as the driver grows increasingly uncertain as to whether the battery-powered car will make it from point A to point B.

- “Drivers of electric cars know that they cannot simply re-fuel at any given time. They must re-charge, which requires planning,” explained Per Lindberg, Global Business Development Executive, Telenor Connexion. – “A good communications solution is necessary in order to plan your driving. You will not find an electric car without a telematics solution – that’s where we come in.”

Battery life of an electric car is dependent on a number of factors, including traffic conditions and even the weather. This makes it critical that the driver is able to communicate with the outside world and accurately calculate just how far his battery can take him.

Telenor in ideal position to deliver solutions
Telenor Connexion has a history of delivering telematics solutions to vehicles, in addition to experience working with the electric utilities companies in creating automated meter reading solutions. This puts the company in an ideal position when combining automotive telematics and electric utilities support for the electric car industry.

- “Telenor will deliver the communication. We have a network of companies that we will work with, including the electric utility companies, so it is possible to take on the role of mediator,” said Lindberg. – “The utility companies are now looking into how electric cars will affect their business, what they need to do and what their position will be, and we’re helping them along the way.”

New challenges for the electric utility companies
Electric vehicles present new challenges for the utility companies. For example, a driver of an electric car may drive to a friend’s house for dinner and wish to charge his vehicle during his stay. The problem arises when the driver’s electricity usage to re-charge his car shows up on his friend’s monthly power bill. To solve this dilemma the power company needs to be alerted that this electricity is for the car, not the friend, and that the driver of the vehicle should be charged instead.

- “The industry is developing ways of identifying whether electricity is used by the vehicle or the household, which results in a completely new business model for the utility companies,” said Lindberg. – “From a Telenor perspective it doesn’t differ much whether it’s an electricity meter or a car that wants to send data via our network, it’s the data that we transmit in both cases. Where it gets interesting is when we start thinking about the electric vehicle communicating to the electric grid.

Electric cars challenge the current methods of distributing electricity.
There are still a number of questions remaining when it comes to the infrastructure and distribution of electricity to meet the new needs of electric cars. For example, who will own the charging stations? When parking downtown, will parking and battery charging be billed together? And when you charge your car, can you select the company from which you will purchase your power?

According to Göran Brandt, Vice President of Business Development at Telenor Connexion, flexibility is the key to the successful spread of electric cars. “At the end of the day, it’s all about retrieving the necessary information, such as location, consumption, preferred method of payment, etc. There will most likely not be a single solution working in all countries and places. Flexibility and long-term consistency are essential.”

Electric cars drive telematics growth
Telenor has identified telematics as one of its key growth areas. Since telematics will be a standard feature in all electric cars, this industry will serve as one of the main drivers of this growth.

- “I think we will see a very quick rollout of electric cars, as there is a lot of political pressure on getting these vehicles to the market and many government subsidies are now being offered to encourage uptake,” said Lindberg. – “We are excited to support the spread of electric cars, and we will do our best to help alleviate all unnecessary range anxiety for consumers.”

Billoo Development and Telenor Connexion have today announced that they have formed a partnership to deploy “Billoo global sustainable road mobility management solutions” worldwide.

Congestion is a huge drain on the economy and on the environment with its costs running into USD$ hundreds of billions (3 percent of GDP in OECD countries and even higher in Asia).

– Traffic management is becoming increasingly important in modern society, and governments around the world are beginning to realize this. One of the strengths of the Billoo solution is its global deployment. As a provider of worldwide M2M connectivity solutions we are proud to form part of a partnership that offers governments all over the world, a solution that transcends international boundaries, says Pablo Contreras, Global Business Development Executive, Telenor Connexion.

Many strategies have been tested but only a permanent and real time management of traffic demands throughout an entire road network can properly solve road traffic issues. This requires a solution with the ability to process an extensive number of very short messages (via machine-to-machine, M2M, communication) and a high capacity of computations at low rates. The Billoo solution capitalizes on the high reliability and scalability that Telenor Connexion global M2M connectivity provides.

– Telenor Connexion offers Billoo a highly secure M2M infrastructure and organization, as well as support services for worldwide deployment. Its global mobile network is optimized to receive high volume data traffic, says Philip van der Heijden, CEO of Billoo Development BV.

By having developed its own solution from inception, by exchanging data between vehicles and its computer centre in a bi-directional manner and by computing this data in real time, Billoo offers a fully comprehensive solution based on GPS/GPRS technologies which solves all the main issues regarding the management of road mobility independently of the length and nature of the road network and independently of the number of vehicles moving simultaneously (regardless of vehicle quantity).

Billoo devices use the Telenor Connexion eSIM technology with the Telenor worldwide M2M services and the platform dedicated solely to M2M traffic. The Telenor Connexion M2M connectivity solutions provide Billoo the high security level that a road mobility management solution requires.

There is enormous potential and fast development in Location Based Services, LBS, and road mobility management solutions are a cornerstone to this progress.
