Within the automotive industry M2M connectivity can provide a range of different functions and possibilities. For passenger cars there is presently a range of applications related to M2M communications or telematics. Car telematics can typically be divided into a number of service groups:

Base telematics (eCall, bCall, stolen vehicle tracking)

Convenience services (concierge, vehicle homepage etc.)

Internal services (remote diagnostics, remote S/W download)

Infotainment (streaming radio, map updates, web browsing etc).

Within the commercial vehicle industry, connectivity can provide the possibility for a range of value adding services for manufacturers of truck as well as the end-user of the truck. Truck OEM:s have several drivers to add communication services in the truck:

Potential new revenue sources – by providing services such as Fleet Management

Quality – by monitoring diagnostics functions

Cost reduction – by monitoring diagnostics function, preventive maintenance

New ways of selling trucks – by leasing contracts, service contracts etc.

According to Berg Insight (2009), Fleet Management solutions alone are expected to grow by an annual compound rate of over 20 percent, from 1.1 million units (Europe) in 2009 to 3.3 million units in 2013. In addition, an EU-based ITS action plan is pinpointing a number of targets to enable different solutions within the transportation sector. The key objectives is to provide interoperable (within EU and between different transportation systems) solutions to reduce congestion, traffic fatalities and CO2 emission by use of intelligent transport systems. Wireless connectivity plays an important role in achieving this and is expected to increase in both line-fit solutions as well as after-market solutions.

Telenor Connexion is the leading provider of connectivity solutions for the automotive industry working closely with customers such as Daimler, Scania and Volvo Cars securing the operations of already deployed telematics solutions as well as developing the future solutions for the connected car or truck.
