The implications of a dormant SIM

It’s a common topic today in M2M forums, and especially in telematics discussions about the idea to use a “dormant SIM” to alleviate unnecessary signaling in GSM networks. Definitely this seems like a smart idea especially when every car in Europe should be equipped with an Emergency Call (eCall) system within the next 5 years. I think it’s important though to understand the implications of a dormant SIM not only for Mobile Network Operators, but also for OEMS and consumers.

EC takes first step to implement eCall

Today, September 8, the European Commission adopted a recommendation regarding eCall. It recommends member states to ensure that we mobile network operators upgrade our infrastructure to support eCall (Emergency call services) by 2015.
