With the help of a connected “dynamic drive recorder” insurance companies can now assess the actual risk of individual drivers and price
that risk accordingly.

MyDrive Solutions offers advanced risk management solutions for automotive insurers. The company has signed an agreement with Telenor Connexion, the leading provider of premium M2M solutions, to supply global connectivity for its unique insurance telematics solution MyDrive Dynamic.

This new solution enables motor insurance companies to use driving behavioural data to assess the risk presented by individual drivers, and price motor insurance premiums accordingly.

MyDrive is unique in the way it matches GPS data from drivers – taking a snapshot every second – to the underlying map of the road. A connected “Dynamic Drive Recorder (DDR)” placed in the car collects vast amounts of data and transmits it back to the insurer’s data systems. The solution not only measures whether the driver was on a three-lane motorway or country road, but also whether he or she was approaching a junction or navigating a tight corner. Understanding the context of a driver’s actions shows how safe an individual’s driving style is, thus enabling the insurance company to assess the actual risk very easily and very accurately and price that risk accordingly.

The embedded connectivity solution provided by Telenor Connexion is a premium M2M solution with an integrated eSIM allowing for MyDrive’s insurance solution to be marketed and actually deployed globally from the outset. Telenor Connexion provides a real time managed solution giving MyDrive unrivalled visibility to the connectivity of their devices wherever the may be in the world.

“Predominantely we choose Telenor Connexion due to the company’s deep expertise in M2M. Their experience of machine-to-machine and particularly in the telematics field is unrivalled. The flexibility, both technical and commercial, and the integration capabilities together with the Service Portal offered made them the obvious choice for this business and life critical solution”, says Linden Holliday, CEO at MyDrive Solutions.

“MyDrive brings an innovative and entirely unique solution to the insurance sector. With its behavior-based system, which provides a more accurate way of assessing risk, MyDrive is way ahead of the market. Insurance telematics will change the industry for good and we are excited to be part of this exciting development”, says Dean Woods, Head of Region UK and Ireland at Telenor Connexion.

Whilst most other companies rely on 30-second snapshots of a car’s progress, along with registering any exceptionally high levels of braking or acceleration, MyDrive analyses every single second of the driver’s journey. Combined with GPS data, the solution contextualises every decision each driver makes by mapping it to the road network, thus providing a far more accurate picture.

About MyDrive Solutions
MyDrive is a rapidly growing company providing the ability to understand the skill levels of a car driver in undertaking the extremely complex task of driving a car on the UK’s congested road network. We monitor driving behaviour on a second-by-second basis, and deploy industry leading analysis to determine exactly how capable the driver is, in real time, and on an ongoing basis. Importantly, we have a European patent (pending), protecting our unique ability to contextualise individual behaviour to the road network. In short, this allows us to understand the road topography that the driver is interacting with, and therefore to understand what the driver should be doing at all points on the road, to determine the propriateness of their driving (e.g. is the driver approaching a road junction at too high a speed, or cornering at an inappropriate speed?) This information can be utilized in many ways, from self-improvement to achieve better fuel efficiency, to proving driving capability, and therefore risk profile, to an insurance company, to a parent ensuring that their child is driving in a safe and sensible manner. Our key focus is the insurance industry. Until now, insurers have been forced to consider risk on the basis of proxies for behaviour, since it has hitherto been impossible to actually observe behaviour. There is statistical validity in using such proxies, but this is based on averaging a pool of drivers; there are many drivers who share the
pooled characteristics (occupation, age, marital status etc) but who do drive in a different manner to that pool. Our capability allows the insurer to largely ignore the “old proxies”, and focus instead on what is really important, which is how the driver drives, not how the statistics suggest he ought to drive. www.mydrivesolutions.com

Driving the evolution of the M2M ecosystem, the company shares some insights into its success.

According to Berg Insight estimates, the number of cellular network connections worldwide used for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication will reach 294.1 million connections by 2015. While the demand continues to grow for both business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) applications, the important thing to note is that they require varying deployment criteria and significantly different approaches. The crucial point is that B2B applications are not just for convenience, they are many times business and life critical.

Telenor Connexion, a world leader in premium M2M solutions for business and life critical applications, today shares a few of the many key factors for businesses to consider when deploying a premium B2B M2M solution. If these factors are taken into account, the deployment results in reliable, flexible, efficient and cost effective M2M services for the customer, as well as the end user. Telenor Connexion offers all of their customers, together with partners, the opportunity to receive M2M Quality Program consulting during the design, implementation and operational phases of launching an M2M or Telematics Service. It is one of the ways Telenor Connexion differentiates themselves as an M2M connectivity provider

“Our proven customer record, and over a decade of experience in delivering premium M2M solutions, allows us to know what it takes to deliver a successful B2B M2M deployment,” says Per Simonsen, CEO of Telenor Connexion. “With this knowledge companies can deploy their M2M solutions right the first time and reap the important benefits M2M has to offer.”

The following key factors, are some examples of what is needed for a successful deployment of business and life critical M2M applications:

Optimizing traffic and terminal behavior
It is essential to ensure that the terminal and application are optimized to carry the necessary traffic and minimize signaling etc.

Ensuring terminals are handling over-the-air (OTA) upgrades and reset mechanisms correctly
Sometimes M2M terminals are not performing correctly due to network outages, unplanned upgrades, system overload, etc. and it is not possible to physically reset the terminal to fix the problem. To ensure quality of service, it is crucial that the solution can be remotely managed over-the-air and have inbuilt reset mechanisms.

Handling redundancy and failover mechanisms
Especially in the case of B2B, it is extremely important to make sure that if the primary system fails, the M2M communications can continue uninterrupted through proper handling of redundancy and failover mechanisms.

Catering for load peaks in traffic and signaling
Heavy network loads can have a significant impact on the quality of service. Ensuring that the traffic load is properly catered to, even during peak times, eliminates network disturbance and ensures reliable communication.

Controlling traffic effectively with trigger alarms
Early detection and notification of malfunctioning or improperly used devices is mission-critical for a B2B M2M deployment. Trigger alarms are designed to immediately notify a customer, or even automatically deactivate the subscription, depending on the set threshold alarms.

Increasing reliability and coverage with multi-operator support
Providing multi-operator support in a B2B M2M deployment ensures that if the primary operator fails, a back-up operator’s network is immediately available for reliable M2M communications.

Professional and specialized service desk
Customer access to a specialized and proactive M2M service desk is essential in the case of needed troubleshooting an M2M solution.

Telenor Connexion is sharing these keys to successful deployment of business and life critical M2M applications at CTIA Enterprise & Applications, and promoting their M2M Quality Program in booth 554.

Telenor Connexion’s embedded connectivity delivers Stepac’s customers premium services for cold chain monitoring to ensure the best quality goods.

Transporting fresh perishables presents a difficult challenge for retailers. The goods must be transported in a timely fashion in order to provide consumers with the best quality goods. To complicate the situation further, some produce are more sensitive than others; with a few hours delay in the cooling process or distribution chain causing a significant reduction in its marketability.

Stepac, a leading global supplier of real-time cold chain monitoring and tracking solutions to the fresh produce industry, has developed the Xsense solution specifically for perishable foods. The solution, which contains Telenor Connexion’s embedded connectivity, allows the receiver of temperature-sensitive goods to know immediately, before accepting the shipment, if products have remained at the proper temperature for the entire trip.

The Xsense solution works in real-time mode, providing vital information about produce quality from inside the carton or package. It contains temperature and relative humidity sensors, which collect and transfer data by wireless communication to a communication unit (CU) via standard mobile and/or LAN networks. Data is available in real time throughout the shipment and alerts can be sent via SMS or email. GPS tracking lets you view the geographic progress of the shipment as well.

“The partnership of Xsense and Telenor Connexion highlights a growing trend of wireless innovations occuring in business and life critical solutions. Everyday, billions of dollars of temperature-sensitive goods are transported from one location to another. By using wireless connectivity it is now possible to seamlessly monitor the entire cold chain from end-to-end in real time, thus providing an accurate picture of the treatment of goods in transit and enabling true asset management,” says Gwenn Larsson, CMO at Telenor Connexion.

“To wirelessly monitor the temperature of shipments as they travel along the cold chain – and the world – has a large impact not only on the quality of the produce, but also on the financial success of our customers. The return on investment of cold chains depends mainly on the reduction of food waste. However, improved efficiency such as implementing First Expired First Out (FEFO) management, can potentially also save millions of dollars annually”, says Udi Aviran, Commercial Manager at Stepac.

The Xsense solution has been purchased, in the fresh produce and the meat industry, by more than 200 customers all over the globe.

About Stepac and Xsense®
In the fresh produce industry since 1995, our global sales and support teams have gained intimate knowledge of cold chain logistics. Through the development and marketing of our Xtend®modified atmosphere/modified humidity packaging for the fresh produce industry, we identified an unmet need for real time monitoring of temperature and relative humidity from inside produce cartons.
To meet this challenge, we developed a new concept in cold chain monitoring: Xsense™, a comprehensive program that enables cold chain stake holders to make critical decisions about their perishable products in real time. Xsense monitors the quality of perishable items, as dictated by temperature and humidity, during all stages of the cold chain—from palletization in the packing house to arrival at retail outlets.
